Friday Lunchtime Concert on Radio 3.

INVITATION from Graham Griffiths

Graham was scheduled for the lecture last June on Leokadiya Kasperova, click in his name for some biographic details.

You are cordially invited to listen to a short concert on Radio 3.

The concert will feature a beautiful and newly-discovered composition by Leokadiya Kashperova, Russia’s foremost woman composer. (She was Stravinsky’s most important piano teacher, 1899-1901.)

FRIDAY, 18th DECEMBER, on Radio 3.

Lunchtime Concert, starts at 1, ends at 2.

The Gould Piano Trio will perform two works:

  • Schubert, Piano Trio in Bb
  • Kashperova, Piano Trio in A minor.

Graham located the unfinished score of this beautiful music by Kashperova in Moscow last year in a bundle of old manuscript pages. To his amazement, he realised that Kashperova had been composing a Piano Trio - secretly, of course: her Romantic music was out of favour with the Soviet authorities. Pretty much all four movements were completed when Kashperova died in 1940. It is a miracle that the pencil sketches survived at all.

Realising the significance of this discovery, the directors of the Russian National Museum of Music granted Graham permission to complete the work, an almost unprecedented gesture of support for a non-Russian music researcher, and to prepare the work for publication by Boosey & Hawkes.

P.S. Many colleagues in Russia will also be tuning in, via the Radio 3 link, to witness history being made – for this will be the trio’s very first performance.
