‘Chekhov and Tolstoy: Writing Their Biographies and Translating Their Prose in the 21st Century’

by

Dr. Rosamund Bartlett,

2pm, Tuesday 16th May 2017,

Room 317, The Hetherington Building, Bute Gardens

45 minute talk  illustrated with slides, followed by questions.

“How should one tackle writing English-language biographies of Russia's great writers in the post-Soviet age? Can immersion in the life of a writer enhance translations of their works, and can translation provide biographical insight? This talk will explore such questions through a discussion of the unusual experience of writing biographies of Tolstoy and Chekhov while simultaneously translating their prose.”

Poster for the event.

Message from Rosemary: All are definitely welcome, and Dr. Gullotta has stressed how nice it would be see members from LADFAS.
